One of the most impressive architectural examples of art nouveau in Porto, Lello bookshop offers a truly exceptional visual and intellectual experience.

Created by an engineering teacher named Xavier Esteves in 1906, Lello Bookshop is an acclaimed bookshop within the book loving community in Porto, in Portugal, and around Europe. But it's not only for book lovers: The beautiful architecture and design; the entrance and the sprawling steps (which are apparently inspired by the ones in Gallery Lafayette); the colours and the numerous shelves packed with old and new books, all make for a wonderful experience.

It isn't necessarily the place to buy your favourite book, as many of them are in Portuguese (Portuguese reading company excluded, naturally), but nevertheless, a visit in Lello is a must when visiting Porto.

"…a fascinating and daring shop with high wooden shelves and a staircase that looks like it will move when you step on it. It's a gothic paradise with many floors and gives you a distinct feeling that you are stepping out of reality to find books you would usually never consider picking up amongst its art nouveau interiors."
