Porto boasts no less than six bridges: The three earliest bridges were constructed between 1843 and 1886, while the first of the three "modern" bridges was opened in 1963. You can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the six bridges from the Foz.

Possibly, the most famous of the six bridges in Porto is the Dom Luis I Bridge, which is indeed a very impressive architectural endeavor. No one can get back from a trip to Porto without at least one photo of the D. Luis I Bridge, which is in absolute command of the postcard industry too.

The engineer who constructed the bridge was named Teófilo Seyrig, he was Belgian engineer who had worked beforehand with the famous Gustavo Eiffel. Work on the Bridge begun in 1881 and its completion took over five years; it was to replace the Ponte Pênsil (suspended bridge) that was built in 1843.

It seems that in Porto, bridges are much more than just a means of getting from one side of the river to the other.
