A large area of the old city of Porto is classified as a World Heritage site, thereby ensuring the preservation of the beautiful old buildings this area boasts.

In 1996 the historical center of Porto was declared a World Heritage Site. The impressive structures dominating the medieval district of Porto, and the many renovation projects which have taken place in this area (with the encouragement of Porto's Council), have brought about UNESCO's decleration.

The classified area includes some impressive old buildings and public areas within the old city's Romanesque Wall, as well as larger areas outside the city walls, which are also protected. Amongst the numerous sightseeing options in this area are:
The Cathedral (Sé), The Church of São Francisco, S. Lourenço Church, The Church of Idelfonso (Igreja de Sào Idelfonso), the Bishop's Palace, and many other churches and impressive buildings that used to be owned by Porto's most distinguished figures.

There are many walks you could take around this area to see the many different monuments. Naturally, there are many guided tours available. For a more learned experience, inquire in the nearby Tourist Office or at your hotel about guided tour options. If you prefer the independant option, simply pickup a detailed map of the Historical Centre (which is available in most hotels and all tourist offices) and wander around its enchanting streets.
