The Cathedral is one of the most interesting monuments in Porto, as it offers visitors a peek into the changing architectural and decorative styles which have influenced Porto along time.

The Cathedral of Porto (The Sé) was built in the 12th century according to the Romanesque style dominating that era. In the Cathedral you will notice a selection of paintings by baroque artists, silver ornaments and altarpieces, tiled walls and architectural decorations, amongst other objects and designs of aesthetic interest.

Ever since the Cathedral was built (and until the 18th century) it went through a series of alterations according to the changing styles of architecture in Portuguese culture. For example, the gothic cloister was added at the end of the 14th century and the main chapel was erected only in the 17th century. The décor of the Cathedral has also changed much along the years with various artistic touches changing central elements in its appearance.
