The Sao Francisco Church is one of the last remaining medieval gothic buildings in Porto. Boasting the most beautiful golden wood carvings, this is definitely high in the "must see list" of Porto.
The Sao Francisco Church is what has remained of the Franciscan Convents which used to enclose the area between the Praça do Infante and the Rua do Comércio do Porto. The church was constructed between the 14th and 15th century, it plans going through minor changes along the way, and in the 16th century, the Chapel of the Baptism of Christ was added to the building. The beautiful wood carvings, which are clearly best part of the Sao Francisco Church, were added only in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The Sao Francisco is one of the most beautiful churches that Porto has to offer, and it certainly has plenty of churches! So, if your church touring patience might snap earlier than expected, make sure to make Sao Francisco one of the first churches you visit.
